PROJECT NISIBIS
Fundraising campaign for St Ephraim's Orthodox Parish future building in Cambridge
Fundraising campaign for St Ephraim's Orthodox Parish future building in Cambridge
“By Divine Providence, the diaspora emerged in order that the light of Orthodoxy would shine throughout the world.” - St John of Shanghai
For over half a century, our church has worshipped in shared and rented buildings. Whilst we extend our deep gratitude to our past and present landlords (the Church of England), we dream of our own church, which will give us greater liturgical, educational and social freedom. We are looking to raise two million pounds (£2,000,000) over the next five years. We realise this is an ambitious target, but with God, all things are possible!
Our parish is dedicated to St. Ephraim the Syrian and we dedicate this fundraising project to our patron saint. St. Ephraim the Syrian (A.D. 306-73) was born in Nisibis which was in the Syrian region of the Roman Empire that is now in Turkey. Ephraim grew up during the legalization of Christianity in the empire by St. Constantine the Great and his Edict of Milan (313). His devout mother taught Ephraim the Christian faith, and St. Jacob of Nisibis guided him to embrace the monastic way of conversion and asceticism. It is after St. Ephraim's home town that we name this project, as he started his monastic journey there within the local Church participating in the liturgical life of the community.
is to create a welcoming church for all Orthodox Christians, shining Christ's light in Cambridge for generations to come.
We are calling on all Christians in the UK and beyond to support our project to create a beautiful and living witness to ancient Christianity in one of the great intellectual hearts of the Western World.
